Idioms

Idioms are a form of figurative language where the individuals words can not be interpreted literally to understand the meaning of the phrase. Example of idioms include:

  • I am feeling my age!
  • We’re playing rain or shine.
  • She really rattled his cage.

There are several ‘idiom dictionaries’ available. Unfortunately, they give definitions to the idioms which isn’t very helpful when you’re doing information extraction. What is needed is a ‘literal paraphrase’ of the figurative language. The Legendary Idiom service does just that; it finds idioms in text and replaces them with paraphrases that the machine can easily understand.
